Small groups can be planned or unplanned. Sometimes, they begin with some friends having coffee. Other times, a person goes looking for a group to join. Many times, they evolve from something that may be completely different from a small group.
Last year, our religious education classes were remote. This time was a big opportunity for everyone, and our families experienced it in many ways – it brought growth, struggles, deep relationships, joy, headaches and everything you can imagine. Many families agreed one of the biggest things it brought is a greater connection between faith formation and the family. Amen!
So, instead of running away from last year, we are trying to take with us the meaningful things we learned – family connection is one of them. Some parents told us how much they grew in their faith, and it helped them nurture their children’s faith. Some dads participated more last year than in the past. We want to keep that faith development going for all our families.
Growing in faith with others is what small groups is all about, and it might look different for everyone. Regular small group meetings can be tricky for families and busy schedules, so “stand-alone” gatherings can be a great small-group alternative. The faith formation department is planning a few “Faith Talks,” targeted for parents this year. They will happen on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 6:00 to 7:20 p.m. (during regular religious education class times), and we will meet in Myrick Hall. The faith talks will be presented by members of the St. Joseph clergy, and each presentation will be the same on Monday and Tuesday… so you can attend on the day that works better for you. All RE and school parents are welcome… and, really, anyone who is interested is welcome.
The dates for the talks are October 25/26, January 24/25 and March 7/8.
It could be a date night, friends’ night, get-out-of-the house night, self-care night, faith-building night and more. Attend when your children are at religious education, sports practice or home with a sitter. Grab a neighbor and enjoy a break from your evening routine. Join us and meet someone new and find fellowship in our welcoming church and school community. You might spark or even restart your faith journey and open up new paths to take. You might even meet some people with whom you could start a small group… you just never know. Mark your calendars and join us!
